Fix Your Broken PS2
The Complete Guide to Fix Your Broken PS2
This guide will walk you through the process of fixing your Sony Playstation 2 system that is giving the infamous “Disc Read Error”.
Please follow each step carefully and be sure to read our disclaimers at the bottom before proceeding.
- Turn your PlayStation 2 console upside-down. You will find four small rubber “feet”, as well as a few (the number ranges, as there are several different versions of the PlayStation 2 system) square plastic pieces. Use your fingernail to lift up on all these pieces. Underneath each piece, you will find a screw.

- Use a screwdriver to unscrew each screw. Some will be long screws, and others will be short. Set them all aside for now.

- Now that the PlayStation 2 has been unscrewed, carefully flip it back right-side-up. Carefully lift up the rear of the system.

- Next, slide the whole top piece towards the front of the system.

- This will separate the top half of the console from the lower half, except for a silver ribbon connecting the lower half to the power/reset buttons.

- The only piece that we will be messing with is the piece with the yellow sticker. This is the CD/DVD drive. There are four small screws holding this piece on.

- Unscrew all four screws. If the screws in your particular piece are too small for your screwdriver, the tip of a pocketknife should work (this is what I often use). Lift up on the whole piece, and set it aside.

- Under the piece that you just removed in step 7, you will find the disc tray.

- Fetch some rubbing alcohol and a clean q-tip.

- Slightly dampen one end of the q-tip with rubbing alcohol. Be sure not to use too much – just enough to dampen one end. Use the damp end of the q-tip to clean the lens’ “eye”. The lens’ eye has a slightly blue color, and is circled in the photo below.

- Well, that is it! All that is left now is to put everything back together, which is very straightforward. Use the previous steps if necessary.
Tip: It is recommended that you regularly clean your PlayStation 2’s lens, to keep it from giving problems in the future. Also, be sure to keep your system free from dust.
